  • Client Needs

    MBDA, the European defence organisation, were experiencing external pressure due to the industry-wide decline in government and domestic spending. To support the business to explore new export markets, it was crucial that the customer-facing functions had the internal capabilities to navigate the changing environment.

    Alongside this, the business was facing a time-critical challenge as, due to the long tenure of their senior leadership, they were now approaching a phase of attrition due to retirement. Building a robust talent pipeline of successors was therefore imperative.

    Kiddy were approached to design a developmental assessment to measure the extent to which their leaders had the necessary capabilities for future success. The aim of this initiative was to help the business to better understand what development their leaders required to thrive in the shifting landscape, as well as succession plan for critical senior roles.

  • Our Approach

    Kiddy took a partnership approach, working closely with subject matter experts and key leaders in the organisation to develop a robust and effective process. To enhance the realism of the assessment, together with MBDA, Kiddy created a bespoke business simulation designed to mirror the organisation’s challenges.

    Having gained the support of the Exec in the tailored design process, Kiddy partnered with key leaders in the business to conduct the leadership assessments and development discussions.


The UK Development Centres have been invaluable for the business in identifying the development needs of their future leaders. As a result of the initial pilot, Kiddy have been engaged to develop similar tailored assessments in different functions for nearly 100 people across the UK business. This has provided insight into development themes at both an organisational and individual level, and has enabled the implementation of targeted training and development activities to strengthen the talent base and increase readiness for senior leadership positions.

Testament to the value leaders have personally taken from the assessments is the enthusiasm and willingness of previous participants to be future observers.

Together with MBDA, we are now looking to create a developmental assessment approach across their European business.
